A recent survey of the best value long-haul destinations saw South Africa score very favourably, so in this blog we have highlighted some of the destination’s top regions to visit in the next few weeks if you want to take advantage of some serious spending power. Autumn in South Africa means fewer crowds, more manageable temperatures and, most importantly, bargains galore, so what are you waiting for?
The Cape Winelands
The Cape Winelands is a year-round favourite of Africa Travel’s clients, but autumn marks the time to harvest and to release new vintages, making it the perfect season for the oenophile, or wine lover. The vineyards are an explosion of colours, and it is also festival time, with the Franschhoek Literary Festival and Nuy Valley Festival both held in May.

Kruger National Park
Some say that the Kruger National Park is at its finest during the autumn months as the sometimes oppressive summer heat starts to dissipate and makes for much more comfortable game viewing. The crowds also thin out and prices drop, as does the level of rainfall, making the surrounding bush sparser and the animals easier to spot.

The Karoo
Head inland at this time of year to the Karoo region and enjoy clear days and warm nights under the finest star-filled skies imaginable. Almost unbearable in the scorching summer, autumn is the perfect season to explore this under-rated, and seldom-visited area, with festivals such as Prince Albert’s Journey to Jazz, and South Africa’s very own version of America’s Burning Man festival – AfrikaBurn, taking place during this time.

Golden Gate National Park
Lastly go off the beaten track in South Africa’s autumn to the Golden Gate National Park. Home to sandstone cliffs which sit on either side of the valley, this time of year brings rich tree foliage, bright skies and extraordinarily-coloured sunsets. It is all about the great outdoors here – hiking trials, cave explorations, scenic drives, mountain bike adventures & cold water swimming - with the wonderfully-quirky town of Clarens the perfect base.
